Accessing the Subconscious through Touch and Sound
Touch and Sound are two of the most powerful ways of accessing the subconscious. They directly tune your brainwaves and nervous system.
We - Westerners - have been conditioned to believe our inner world, or dream states, are irrational, nonsensical, and inferior to logic. They're anything but. Your dreams communicate to you in symbols that only you can translate, that have deep meaning and very personal associations. They are telling you your own story in a way that no one else can. Reflecting you the inner processes that are creating your external reality. Your dreams are also an endless wellspring of creativity. Imagery holds meaning and when you bring those images out into the world and they are finally creatively expressed rather than suppressed, it creates ripples in the fabric of reality and touches others that have a vibratory resonance to those images or style in which it was expressed. This is true art.
Expression of an inner process is what deeply touches another and is one of the most profound ways in which humans connect. It doesn't necessarily have to be an image. It could be any creative medium: a quilt, song, vision, poem, meal, community, architecture, design, literally anything. Dreams are the vibration of a new world. The unseen that is trying to be born through you, carrying something that wants to be made conscious and brought into the light.
It can be hard for people in this modern day and age to keep a dream journal or to remember every detail of their dreams as they wake up. I get it. I only write down dreams that feel like “the big ones”. That I know for myself I can't process it until I talk it out, write it out, or see it reflected in some way.
But that's why Massage and Sound are so interesting. These art forms take you into what we're now calling the theta state which is “the in-between”. It's where you are dreaming, but you're able to remain somewhat conscious while you're dreaming. Almost like lucid dreaming. Instead of controlling the dream, I like to just observe what is arising spontaneously with a level of consciousness, so that it's more easily remembered so that my memory retains what has emerged and I can bring it back to the mundane and integrate it into my daily life more easily.
Massage from a practitioner that allows me to go there and truly facilitates an environment conducive to entering the Theta state, as opposed to a massage that is just trying to fix my muscular tissue, has been imperative to my healing journey. Oftentimes the healing journey is not just physical. In my journey, I've only healed physical manifestations of symptoms by unveiling subconscious processes, or emotions that unfold at exactly the right time. Almost as though my body, psyche, and spirit know exactly what to do to heal themselves. Almost as though I'm just observing and allowing it to happen from an unbiased non-judgmental standpoint. Almost as though I'm an embodiment of nature itself.
I’ve had moments of arrival, but does nature ever just arrive? Life keeps happening. So realizations and growth and death just continue to happen. And I feel compelled to observe it continuously because it's the closest thing I have to experience life itself.
